please help with volvo aq 125 b

this is my kids boat it just has minor running problems at this time.i am trying to make sure the firing order and timing are right but i am not a master at mechanics so i need help.should the number one piston be at the front of the motor or the back.i see the firing order as 1,3,4,2 i think.if so when i put a timing light on it whether it is on the front or the rear plug wire i get basically the same thing.when rotating the distributor as far as it will go the best i can get it is about 28 degrees btc.if i am correct it should be around 8 to 10 degrees btc.please help.i would like to try and resolve this for them as i am leaving for texas in the morning for about four months.thanks in advance.

I got a diagram here one time for the 4 cyl Volvo AQ125a do a search
firing order is 1342
#1 is towards the bow and moving clockwise from there it is 1342
basic timing is 10 deg. btdc
strobe setting is 36 deg. btdc 4000rpm
spark plug gap 0.7-0.8 mm
distributor breaker point gap 0.40 mm

I installed the Pertronix electronic ignition several years ago, its a real help. Never a starting problem now.

It sounds to me like your mechanical timing is off. The timing belt pulleys all have to be in their proper relationship when the belt is installed. There are marks on the pulleys and on the belt that need to be aligned. If they are, it's possible the distributor was removed and reinstalled pointing the wrong way. The rotor needs to point to the mark on the edge of the distributor lip.

Jim what mark is that on the distributor lip are you talking abou?? the reason i ask is with the dots on the cam pulley lined up for TDC my rotor is not pointing at the Number 1 spark plug as i read somewhere that it should be..

#1 is in the front but putting the timing light on #4 will definitely give you the same results since #4 firing position is a 360 rotation from #1 from when it fires.

Before you set your timing, set your point dwell with a dwell meter. Don't rely on the gap.

If you can't rotate the distributor far enough to get it down to 10?, you may need to restab your distributor to get more rotation.

I'm just trying to figure out wh i have to advance my dietributor so mych with my new pertronix ignation upgrade..i was thinking with your last reply to that old thread i could pick up somthing in helping figure out why i have to advance my Aq151 so much to get it to fire and run..

There is a notch in the upper edge on the distributor housing. that edge is where the distributor cap mates with it. It basically points in the direction of the #1 spark plug.

I recently put a hot spark ignition in and as the instructions say, it fires as much as 30 degrees off where the points fire so you have to completely readjust your timing. One problem I had was, I originally had it 180 degrees out so it was sparking between the intake and exhaust stroke rather than the top of the compression stroke. You may be able to see your camshaft thru the filler cap hole. The cams should be pointing mostly up when it is at TDC on the compression stroke.
