Re: please help.

This type of post is pretty frequent here....

I dunno what the posters are after...do they think there is some magical secret and once they discover all the arcane miniscule details of their almost 50 year old boat the truth will be revealed?
Or do they harbor some secret hope that there will be some undiscovered extraordinary intrinsic value in their new-to-them boat?

The facts are always the same:
If it floats, it's a boat.
There is no special value to 99.999% of all the old hulls still out there.
There are no owners manuals for these ancient hulls that will reveal some hidden secret.
....and if you can't Google up some information on it, there is no underground depository of secreted old boat data out there.

Re: please help.

Bomar, I agree.
But here is another perspective.
When I bought my old boat I went looking for pictures or original sales fliers from the manufacturer. I just wanted to see what they it looked like new.
Other than that I see no value in spending a lot of time looking for a defunct company.

Unfortunately,so are the cynical, snide responses to these questions,If a new boater has questions pertaining to his/her new purchase,be it a new boat or a 40 year old boat, why chastise them,if one doesn't know the answer or can be at all helpful...why bother responding ??
Lou-dog - there are alot of older boat companys that only produced boats for a limited number of years, and for a number of reasons, the company's folded, and unless the design was spectacular...there was no history left to track. The only tact is to try and find a club/forum for your boat, search for forums and clubs..and if that wont work....make something up.:D

No it doesnt look like that. The model is a viking but that looks like some of the other performer models. Thank you for your response.

I still stand behind what I said above, there is no Rosetta Stone for those old boats.
The OP has a title, it has a name on it, that in itself is damn good for an old hull.
If the OP had any REAL questions (maximum HP, capacity, etc) that would be another story entirely......but the steadly flow of generic "need help on info on XYZ boats" questions is baffling.

Re: please help.

Well, I think a lot of folks buy an older boat and just want to know something about who made it, when, and where to find any information that's out there about their particular model.

I understand that curiosity. And their frustration at times. When I find those questions, I'll do a Google search to see if my search skills can pull something up to share. Often, there isn't anything, and I'll say so. I'm pretty good at searching for stuff, and will do it if I have time.

As for the "jerks" stuff, that's a different story. Everyone posting here is doing it on a voluntary basis. Often, what the oldtimers post is the bare bones information. Sometimes it's saying that there's no information and that it doesn't matter, anyhow.

Sometimes, a poster (not this one) will write an ungrammatical, poorly-spelled query, providing very little information. Most often, such posts just get ignored. There's a post at the top of most sections that describes how to get help here, and it offers very, very good advice about posting questions that get answers.

When some oldtimers do answer a question that doesn't include the necessary information or that shows a lack of concern about making the question easy to read, you get a snide comment...often along with the information. Other times, the missing information is pointed out....pointedly.

Bottom line is that coming here and asking questions is asking a complete stranger to devote time to providing the desired information. That person isn't getting paid a dime to do that, but the depth of knowledge here is enormous, and there's no better place to get answers about boats, engines, and more.

All those who have the information ask is that posters not waste their time. Every time someone has to ask for the model number or the horsepower, or the year, it's wasted effort.

I help wherever I can. I'm retired, and have the time to spend some of it here. I do it because the folks here helped me when I had a new old Johnson with a problem.

Telling someone the facts is not being a jerk. Telling someone they need to supply more information is not being a jerk. Telling someone they shouldn't run an outboard over the horsepower rating of their boat is not being a jerk. Telling someone that who made an obscure boat doesn't matter is not being a jerk.

Calling people who are trying to help, unpaid, jerks is, however, being a jerk.

Re: please help.

I don't have any info on your boat, lou-dog, just wanted to say I was in the same situation when I bought my first boat last April. It's a '71 Saf T Mate, a brand that was absorbed by Four Winns in the mid '70s.

I tried to find info about my boat model without much luck as well. I didn't expect to discover any "magical secret" info, I wanted to know how much it weighed, and I wanted to know if there was anything I should know, like maybe "early 70's Saf T Mate Admirals were known for thin hulls which would easily crack open and cause the boat to sink within seconds" stuff like that. I was also just plain curious about the boat I just bought.

I think long-time seen it all, done it all boat owners like bomar76 have just forgotten what it's like to get your first new-to-you boat. ;)

Re: please help.

Thanks for all your help people. I just contacted the OR state marine board my hull # is ok it says performer on the hull # made in compton and the numbers match up to all the glasspar numbers that they had. all my #'s are ok . Its just kinda weird to have a performer boat and the title says its a glasspar . But the boat is a performer viking deluxe. And it has glasspar hull #'s on a tag that is made by performer. so i just wanted to say thanks for everyones help. I just wish there was a little more info on google about performer boats!!!!
