Plenty of exhaust but no water from the tail-tell??

I do not seem to be able to get any water appear from the tail-tell connector on my Merc 500 (Serial 3238775). I have replaced the powerhead to leg gasket, impeller etc. but seem to get more exhaukt come from the pipe than water. Any sguuestion? For information, the Water pump to power head feed tube is connected properly!

Have you checked that the tell tale hose is clear?Blow back thru it with compressed air.There should be no exhaust coming from the tell tale as it is connected to the cooling system if there is exhaust you have a problem!!!Does your engine have a tell tale or are you looking at the exhaust by pass located at the back of the center section just under the power head normally 2 square holes
