First, sorry for such a long post, but the better the question, the better the answer.

TOPIC 1) 225 carb vs EFI
I have been searching the past 3 months for a replacement powerplant. I have narrowed my decision down to a 225 Merc FFI or carb model.
The EFI motor in ? is a 1997, rebuilt, I am curious as to the opinions. Are the EFI motors as reliable as a carb model. I know I have limped home on many occasions with many outboards and always was a carb model. I am curious because in an automobile engine, The ignition module is either 100% or 0. I imagine this holds true with Outboard also?
I am also curious as to the difference in cubic inches between motors, i.e. 153 vs 185. Is this accomplished through bore, stroke or both ?

Also difference is gear ration. 1.75:1 vs 1.87:1, can I tell via lower unit which gear is contained within? I am also curious as to WOT RPM, 300 more for EFI, Is the difference in timing or fuel management?

Is there any way upon inspection of this motor to test EFI related components with normal test equip V/O/amp meter? What should compression be on 225 EFI.
And can someone please supply serial number range for 97 EFI 225.

I will end with that, still many ?, but will scour the net for more answers.

THANKS TO ALL WHOM REPLY!!!!!!!!!!

Yo ho ho and a bottle of Rum~

Compression 110-135 no more then 15 lbs between cyl. Increase in cu. in. by bore. From 1992-1999 looks like 2 fuel systems for EFI, SN OG303045 and below and SN OG303046 and above.
