what exactly does the plug described in the headline? number 33 on pic is missing from one of the carbs. number 38 on pic is the "plug float camber" as its described.

Sorry.---The needle and seat controls the fuel coming into the carburetor bowl and thus the level of fuel in the bowl.-----The orifice controls the fuel as it is leaving the carburetor bowl to be mixed with the incoming air.

i dont get that either, since the hole is mainly closed with a screw and red plastic washer.

The part name is misleading. It needs a comma. The part name is Plug, Float Chamber. It is a plug for the "float chamber" which in this case is another name for the carburetor bowl. It's the drain plug. All it does is plug the drain.

Edit: didn't look closely enough, I was looking at #35 originally. Is #38 removable? It looks to be at best a set screw, at worst a pressed-in brass plug.

The orifice plug is not really a plug, rather is has a calibrated hole to meter the amount of fuel that leaves the carburetor bowl.-----The orifice plug ( 33 ) is well inside the carburetor bowl and are you absolutely sure it is missing ?-----------posting of pictures is going to help you here !!

You need to be absolutely sure that #33 is not in there now.---Absolutely sure !!!------Check with a 3/16" diameter screwdriver.

Part #33 is well inside the carburetor bowl.--It is unlikely that it is missing.----Please confirm for yourself with a 3/16" diameter shank screw driver !!!

..as i see in better light, both 33 is on its place in both holes,i see they can removed by a small screwdriver.

A factory manuual includes information how thing work.-------When you understand how things work the trouble shooting becomes a lot easier.--When you post what your motor is doing not doing in some detail you may get answers !

Re: plug float chamber johnson 85ESL73M

i have never run it,previous owner belived cyl 4 had worne stuck rings,he said it idle good cold but just died out when reach working temp. seems just in some need for clean, alot of corrosion and lots of salt on engine surface, cyl heads and old gaskets. all have been cleaned and sanded proper plane. will mount heads in a few days. what numbers of compression should be ok on these? would have been handy with a model specific manual yes!

I have the exact same motor. My comp numbers are lower 130's all cylinders. Runs great. Check comp, if around those numbers then go into the carbs. I had to do mine twice to get them clean enough to run right.

Re: plug float chamber johnson 85ESL73M

You can remove a small cover on the side of the block to inspect the piston and rings.--There are 4 such covers held on by 6 small bolts.-Will need new gaskets at about 99 cents each.

Re: plug float chamber johnson 85ESL73M

i have removed and checked sides, looks good. have removed both heads and sanded them, new gaskets and stuff are ready. it has to be corrotion former owner have had issues on,headgaskets have been there since it was new and had ALOT of salts on them, also the metall edge that covers around cylinders. everything looks just great in cylinders and around on edges now,if comp is poor when i check, something i doubt,i will immediatly screw it apart and fix it all inside. time will show:)

i can see the something green on the air intake cover, have read that it is stator is leaking. better order one new right away i guess when i can see the green stuff?
