it's a stupid question I know....... the last time I had the plugs changed on my 2004 Johnson 40 h.p 2 stroke they put in NGK'S and for some reason they set the gap to .050 plus(or never set them ) and it ran fine , so I regapped them to .030. still runs fine. just went and bought what the motor calls for champion QL78YC. (@ .030gap) here's the dumb question how much than .030 gap can you put on these plug and still having it run ok? not saying i'm gonna do it but those NGK'S ran ok at .050 .

Its the difference between OK and optimal.
- and you - or I - cant really tell the difference between the two.
Consider that the factory spent a whole lotta time and trouble finding out what the "perfect" settings were.
WHy would one stray from their solution?

WHen we test a spark, we get it to spark across how big a gap? huge compared to what the plugs do.
Not sure how performance would degrade.

best o luck
