plug wires

I have 88 spl rude on my runabout. Will an outboard motor start without all the plug wires attached? Had a problem with gas and replaced a rotten fuel line. After it wouldn't start. I tried to crank it a few times then upon inspection saw a broken plug wire. I have no clue but figured since a car would start with a faulty cylinder a boat would.

My '90 88 SPCL will start and run on three cylinders as I found out one time while having a wire problem. Not very fast, but it will run.
