I have a 1986 125HP OB.
I want to change spark plugs from the exisitng surface discharge type to a standard type plug. I understand the performace would be improved.
What would be the new plug number and what gap should it be?
Also, I would like to replace the spark plug cables too. Where would I get replacements? The cables are unique. Is that a coil at the end of each one?
Thanks.

Re: plugs & cables 1986 125HP?

Welcome to iboats. :)

Surface-gap plugs are great for motors mostly used in the upper RPM range. Conventional plugs are better for lower RPM operation and few would notice any difference in top-end performance. I believe L82Cs are a good alternative? (Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.) For the most part, outboard plug wires can last a long time. Automotive supressor wires need regular changing because of fragile carbon fibers. Outboards use stranded copper wire which is much more durable ... and makes much more noise in your radio. Each one is indeed connected to individual coils.

Thanks willybwright.
How would I find what the gap should be on the L82C plug?
I checked sparkplug.com but couldn't find the info.
The reason I thought of replacing the plug wires is because the cable end that connects to the spark plug is all rusty and I can't get down the cable snout to clean the rust out. I figure that rust is inhibiting a clean connection with the spark plug.
Is there a tool that can get in there to sand the rust off? Or do you have any idea where would I buy these plug wires?
Thanks.

I believe the wires are glued into the coils. You can get replacement caps. Probably arouund $3 or so. You only need a pliers (needle-nose works best for me) and some starting fluid to make things slippery, if only for a while. Ether evaporates quickly and leaves no residue. You don't want slippery residue left behind. Points and Contact cleaners work well too.

L82C plugs are used in chrysler outboards and are gapped at 30 thousands. Make sure you have enough clearance in the piston for the L82C. Heat range on some spark plugs are determined on how close the spark is to the fuel source so hotter plugs go deeper inside the cylinder which could cause a problem with the piston actually striking the plug at TDC.
