I have a 71 Johnson 125, I had it out on the weekend, and it ran good for about 15 min. While cruising along at about 15 mph I lost power, the motor sounded like it wasn’t firing on all cylinders. Currently I’m using champion L77 plugs which have standard electrodes, I was told that I should try NGK plugs, possibly BUHW flat plugs. Has anyone had this problem and could this be my problem? The motor after 10 minutes of misfiring seemed to get better. Or can someone tell me which regular electrode NGK plug fits this motor. Thanks.

Does your 70 have a electronic ignition or points type?

I have a 71 125 Johnson and I have the exact same problem. It started after I accidently left the ignition on overnight. The coil has cracks in it and I am considering changing it.

Re: Plugs for 71 Johnson 125

We have a 1973 115 Evinrude and our coils crack all the time due to heat I guess. All we have ever done was to run a bead of silicone over the crack to keep water out. We have never had one to give us a problem due to cracking. We did however have the same problem as you are discribing last summer and it ended up being a bad powerpack that would break down when heat would build up in the motor. It would run fine for a few minutes and then start missing real bad at WOT.
Hope that helps:
Jason
