Plugs in thermostat housing..

I have just added a tell tale to my 1972 65 hp Johnson. After starting the motor with muffs.. I get a squirt of water 5 seconds apart after running for about 5 minutes. I get a flow out of the ports just above the lower units, but it takes about a minute to start flowing out. Is this normal??? I have had the impeller replaced last week.

Also.. what are the two plugs in the thermostat housing that are spring loaded?

Thanks

pressure relief valves. they increase the flow of water when running a fast speeds.

Thank you.. I'm slowly learning.

I found the answer to my other problem.. I pulled the lower unit off again.. double checking... anyway, I connected the muffs up to the lower unit while it was off and realized my backwards water supply here has not even got enough pressure to even get the water level up to the water pump.
