I keep fouling plugs in my 1973 Evinrde outboard, I am running the recommended oil to gas ratio. The plugs seem to have a lot of oil on them, and when I first start the motor up it smokes a lot. should I use a little less oil. Thank You

What motor do you have? What spark plugs are you using? What gas to oil ratio are you using?

What running indication has led you to check the plugs? If you run the engine at idle or just above, and pull the plugs you will see deposits on the plug but once you open the outboard up the plugs will be nice and white. 50:1 is the recomended oil ratio unless otherwise stated,

You should be running the Champion (Q)L77JC4 plugs. If it smokes a lot when you start it after it's sat a week or so that may be normal (fuel tends to evaporate, oil is left in the carbs). Double check your oil mix just to be sure. Should be a pint to 6 gallons, a quart to 12 etc. Looking at the plugs may make you think there's a lot of oil but may be normal. Even 50:1 at idle is a lot. We're assuming the carbs are clean and the motor runs like it should (compression OK, no stuck rings, no weak spark etc).

The best way to check your plugs is to have the boat in the water and give it a good hard run. Immediately shut it off, pull the plugs and they should be a nice tan color. If not, you have a problem. You can't read a plug from idling only.
