I'm re-doing my sleeper seats for my 1975 16' Fiberform ski boat and have to replace the plywood for the seat construction. Can the plywood be of good quality and then painted before re upholsty or should it be pressure treated plywood.

Re: Plywood for seat construction

Personally, I'd do them out of regular ply. Probably Douglas fir, Good1Side (ACX down there?). Pressure treated is usually so gnarly, warped and wet you can't do anything well with it.
If rot is why you're replacing them, put on a coat of pentox after you cut the patterns. I think paint would be a waste of time unless you plan to repaint when it cracks.

I'm sure there will be other opinons. :)

Re: Plywood for seat construction

bob-dog

I am in the process of doing the exact same thing. I used, as mentioned, ACX, then I sealed it with fibreglass resin, epoxy seems to be the concensus. See the West System....

I have a decorative aluminum piece that goes all the way around the seat on the outer edge. Because of that, I decided to seal the edge of the plywood with 5200 sealant, then add the aluminum decorative piece over the top. In addition I added a waterproof piece of laminate I found at the home depot, $50, and glued it down to create a nearly watertight seal. I hope ;)

I am not saying that this is the right way to do it and after looking at what real marine grade plywood looks like you will appreciate why it is expensive. I have a high degree of confidence that this will work, but, I just finished the project last weekend and the boat won't hit the water for at least another 2 months.

Just my 2 cents.
