I was reading a previous post about sealing plywood with epoxy... Is there any certain type of epoxy to use when doing this??? How long does it take to dry?? Does marine rated plywood actually say marine rated or is it a letter code?
Thanks

Clueless Tallman

I use West System epoxy, and have been quite happy with it -- but there are other manufacturers, and some might be a little cheaper. I'm guess it's all pretty much the same price. It's expensive for large projects, but effective as a coating and as an adhesive.

I use regular contruction plywood for the repair projects I've done. Drying time is overnight.

Ok that sounds great... I dont think I really need an adhesive though... What I am doing is redoing the side boards, the engine cover and the boards in the back that cover the transom from the cockpit… They will be covered with Vinyl that is going to be stapled on… What are your recommendations for just waterproofing the plywood without having an adhesive type epoxy???

West System epoxy costs about $60 for a gallon of resin, and $20 or $25 for a quart of hardener. Depending on the amount you need, you might be able to get by with a quart or two of the resin and a pint of the hardener.

Anyway, that will give you a benchmark for price. Epoxy is both a coating and an adhesive. You can use it like varnish as a coating (sounds like that is your intent). It's the best coating material available for waterproofing/sealing wood.

Good luck.
