I just purchased a 1990 Evinrude 70hp that is over heating when the thermastat is in. I have the pointy end of the thermostat resting in the rubber grommet in the block, then the spring and the cover. I have tried two different brand new thermastats and it will still over heat. I have changed the water pump, even though the old one looked fine. When i take the thermastat out all together it does not ever heat. I have read that running no thermostat is bad for the motor also. Does anyone know why my motor still overheats??? Is there anything else I need to check? Or am I'm doing something wrong?

Do you have an alarm going off. Are you using a temp gun to confirm your motor is overheating?

Thanks for the fast response! Yeah I've been using a temp gun at home and on the lake. The overheat alarm does come on at the lake with the thermostat in and the motor is at 180/190 degrees. It's bizzar to me I must be missing something.
