hi everyone, i have a 1973 MonteCarlo II with a OMC 302 V8 inboard. The motor will crank and idle and go in forward and reverse. My problem is when i go full throttle and the boat plains out it will run well for about 100 yds and then just go dead in the water the motor completley dies. i can restart it and run at a better than mid idle for about 5 mins and it dies again. I have changed the spark plugs ,and wires , chaned the fuel pump and all the fuel lines , and have had the carburetor rebuilt 2 times now and the problem still persist . Can someone give some kind of idea as to what could be wrong or somewhere to start looking?

Re: PLZ Help!!

Two things come to mind. Fuel restriction, Or something in the electrical component/s.

Re: PLZ Help!!

need to look down the carb throat while someone else drives
just watch for backfires.... if it's leaning out, it will like to give a lean pop- safety glasses would be good
and if it stalls while a healthy stream of fuel is going in the motor, then turn your focus to the ignition system

Re: PLZ Help!!

If it was timing, I don't think the motor would completely die. It would run poorly, but not conk out. I would trouble shoot the fuel feed system first. It could still be a total failure of the ignition though, but probably not timing.

I like to wait for the motor to start to die, shut off the key immediately, and then check the float bowl for fuel. If the fuel level is very low then you know that you are not getting adequate fuel to the carb. No danger of a face full of backfire that way either. if you have a full float bowl, then start checking ignition.

When my boat had this same issue, it turned out to be a plugged fuel pickup in the gas tank.
