Point Gap

My Seloc # 1301 Johnson/Evinrude repair manual calls for a .030 point gap on my JH-23A 3HP motor. I have seen other documentation that suggests a point gap of .020. My motor runs with either, but I notice that the maximum open range on my newly installed points barely gets to .030. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

^^Agree. Wonder if the Seloc instruction is describing plug gap.

I too have to agree. The usual point gap is 0.020". I've never seen any OB engine using 0.030" gap. JMHO!

Ooops. My misread. Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually the .020 gap gets you pretty darn close if you do not have an OMC timing fixture and continuity tester, but what is more important than gap size is when ( the timing) those points open and break the continuity.

Thanks OMCfan. Just returned from vacation and am back in the process of tweaking. I do have a continuity tester. If time permits for you, how do you use that for the timing process?

There is a good video on youtube that explains setting the points with a multimeter. If you dont have the timing fixture you can use the flywheel. There should be timing marks that line up with a mark on the flywheel.
