Re: Point or Pre Amp which is better and why on a 75hp 757HA Chrysler
Personally speaking, on engines with a Motorola Magna-Power ignition, I always change to an electronic distributor.
Even though points are just signal and don't carry any treal current like on a battery ignition, they still need to be set to .014. They may corrode and cause problems and when the spring gets old it may lose tension resulting in point bounce.
The electric eye is much more accurate since there is no setting to be done AND the shutter on the shaft will reliable blank the photocell current at the exact same time. The only problem is if the electric eye module goes bad. There is no good way to test it. However on three engines used regularly I have not had an electric eye fail in use. I trust them all to get me there and back.
Long story short: Electronic distributor is better.
Even longer story short: Prestolite non-distrinutor ignition is better and Mercury ignition is best But it takes modifications to use either.
