Pointers for outdrive removal/replacement

Tomorrow I am going to pull my outdrive to do a coupler alignment when I drop in the engine. It's an OMC Cobra. Looking at the manual it looks simple enough... (EDIT) disconnect the hydraulic rams from the outdrive... remove the six nuts holding on the outdrive, slide the outdrive back while keeping it on the studs, disconnect the shift cable, then remove the outdrive. Reinstallation is reverse of removal. I think the only gasket I will need will be the one between the outdrive and the transom shield. Am I missing anything here? Any pointers?

Thanks.

I don't think you have to disconnect the shift cable. Cobra drives come straight off with the controller in neutral. There are a couple of o-rings on the water passages. They don't have to be replaced everytime, but I am replacing mine when I reinstall my drive just for piece of mind.

OK. My manual (seloc) said to make sure the drive is in neutral, but it also said the cable will have to be disconnected. Guess I'll see when I get it apart.

I didn't have to disconnect the shift cable on my cobra last fall.

veeeeerrrrryy iiiiiiiiinnnteresting......

What then holds the cable on whatever it's connected to in the outdrive, out of curiosity? I can see the cabel going in there if I peek into the area near the bellows.... ??

Re: Pointers for outdrive removal/replacement

Ok, let me see if I can explain this without it being to confusing. The shift cable is attached to a lever/bellcrank assembly that is inside the transom mount. The Shift rod in the outdrive engages this lever when the outdive is bolted to the transom mount. That's why the shift cable length adjustment is very critical, as it can under or over shift the shift rod if it is out of tolerance. The short answer is that the cable is attached to a fixed mechanism in the transom mount, not the outdrive which is why it doesn't need to be disconnected. If you e mail me at home later mojokim@fuse.net, I can scan you a schematic from my Cobra parts catalog.

U S Boat and the like have gasket sets for installing outdrives. Most times you can find them on the floor (not behind the parts counter). Pretty cheap, I think under $20.00. It has every gasket you will need and them some. Well worth the money.

I think that you were looking at the description for removing a KING COBRA and not a COBRA. I believe the KING COBRA does have the shifter pin to remove.

You're right. I was looking at the KC section. I read through the instructions and looked at all the diagrams and photos in my seloc manual this morning. I'm just waiting for my helper to show up and I'm going to take this off. I have a feeling I'm going to find a problem, I just noticed that the upper driveshaft that pokes through the gimble bearing can be moved up and down while the outdrive is still attached to the boat. I think my gimble bearing is gone, as in not even in there if I'm visualizing it correctly. I'll know for sure in about 2 hours with any luck.

I'll post pics of the carnage if there is any....
