Hey All...the old man is seriously confused...I'm installing new points in this 35hp chrysler motor with magneto .
each time i set it up and try to start ..the Two points wires burns and catch fire.
the two wires are coming from the points goes to the IGN wire which is hot as soon as i turn the switch on,
i have the manual but its confusing me...it seems the two points is closed except when it opened by the cam shaft...
To me it seems that they are both hot half the time... are they not supposed to be open and then close to the power the plug then open again ?
i really don't wanna spoil the points...cost is $115.
Can someone help me in Layman terms....
Thanks Victor

Re: Points Keep Catching Fire

A photo would be excellent but I think I know what your problem is: You are wired incorrectly at the switch. You are putting 12 volts to ground through a dead short.

For a magneto ignition engine, NO 12 volt power goes to the engine through the "I" or "A" terminal. Magnetos are self energising ignition systems.

The two wires that come from the points attach to blue and white terminals on the engine terminal board. THEN at the ignition switch blue and white each attact to an "M" terminal. This is the stop circuit. When you turn off the key, the two "M" terminals have continuity and through the wiring, the two sets of points short each other, stopping spark and stopping the engine.

At the switch, yellow is still attached to "S" and green is still attached to "C". Red is "B," Purple is not used, and orange is overheat indicator. Black is a common ground and may be attached to a ground buss.

Thank you.....and yes...i have both wires connected to a hot wire.... Now when i got the motor it doesn't have any wires...so in the pic i have red connected to the battery....when i flick the switch power goes to the blue....and i was connecting the two points wires to that!!
So......Since i don't have any other wiring...Where to connect the two wires coming from points?

I told you: one to the white terminal and one to the blue, just like the decal on the engine shows. Now, since you don't appear to have the cable, run a blue to one "M" terminal of the ignition switch and a white one to the other "M" terminal. Or, given your proclivity to use household switches, white to one side and blue to the other. Switch in the off position allows the engine to run, switch in the on position kills the engine.

Also understand that the way you have it wired, start and choke are always energised together. A warm engine does not need choke. That's why they are separated with the push-to-choke switch.

Don't have an ignition switch as I suspect given the second photo? break down and spend the 17 bucks. Buy a six terminal Push-to-Choke ignition switch right here at iboats or your local boat dealer.

You can do it the slow way, the fast way, or your way--the half fast way. LOL

Yeah...i am kinda hard of understanding..... But Thanks for your patience , so it seem that those two wires = Connected together the motor runs, Separate them and motor turns off .... OK so if thats the case i guess the battery is not being Recharged eh?

Magneto ignition engines do not have an alternator. They will not recharge the battery. You must recharge the starting battery at home.

Connected, the two points wires short each other and STOP the engine. Separate them to get spark.
