Re: points to electronic ignition question

I changed my 120 to electronic a couple years ago. I went with a pertronix ignitor II. My dad put a pertronix in his 66 mustang years ago and liked it. The main difference between the ignitor and the ignitor II is that with the II version you can leave the key on without frying the coil or module.

You don't have to change the coil but it makes it easier. I got the flamethrower with my unit. If you don't change the coil to an internally ballisted coil you will have to run a separate 12v to the electronic module.

I like mine. I gained about 200 rpm at WOT and it start easier. Installation was very easy.

Pretty easy: Go with the Petronix Ignitor II along with the Flamethrower II 0.6 ohm coil (either epoxy or oil). Remove the purple resistsnce wire from the coil + and tape it off out of the way. Splice a stranded wire directly into the wire going to the electric choke and run that to the coil +. That will give you full 12V to the Petronix module, and you should be good to go.

Yep that is what I did. When I was done I checked the timing and it was still correct.

Make sure to get the pertronix 2 module. I had the regular module and I burned it up using the wrong coil. Now with pertronix 2 I gained about 300 rpm and about 4mph

Petronix Igtnitor II (#91146A) with the epoxy 0.6 ohm Flamethrower II coil (#45111) (the oil filled one should be OK too, a few bucks cheaper). Remove the purple resistance wire from the coil and splice a stranded wire into the choke wire for direct full 12V to the coil + and the red Petronix unit wire.

This is what i got for my 470's, i went with the epoxy coil.

Not really much bad and more good. Cost is the bad, old-schoolers prefer to tinker with things and this removes the tinkering.
I keep a tuned set of points, the original plate and a coil on-board in the event of an emergency. Left the resistor wire but taped it up and then ran a new 12v wire straight from the ignition.
