Re: points vs electric distributor

You need to have a moderator move this post to the I/O forum. This is a general "electrical forum". But your question is stated rather oddly. You said you have a 5.0 and you used a points distributor from a 5.7 which implies you already did it. Then you say the 5.0 came with an electronic distributor. Does that mean you pulled the electronic unit and installed the points style --- or what. You have us confused here. The short answer however is YES -- the two distributors are interchangeable but the rest of the wire harness needs to be compatable as well. And if neither of these are "marine" units then you should not use either one unless the word "bang" followed by smoke and fire means nothing to you.

yes cuz i did not know how to hook up the electronic dizzy with the esa.... i had a 5.7 in the boat but motor was junk so i had a 5.0 merc and i just installed all the 5.7 omc stuff to the 5.0 merc and made it to a omc....

Then YES - use the OMC 5.7 distributor that matches the wiring harness in the boat (OMC). The bottom of it won't care if it's in a 305 or a 350.
