I put an ohm meter lead to the point contacts, and one to ground, and had continuity. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

Re: points

Depends on the meter setting and the position of the points.

It would be a lot easier to help if you would explain what you are trying to find out and why.

Re: points

I have a 25 hp 72 johnson, and no spark, I changed a coil that didn't check out. I have tested the ohm from the end of plug wires to ground and it checks out ok. Would bad condensors cause no spark? I believe the bottom of the coil wires are going to the point set clockwise of the coils, is that correct wiring?

Re: points

Bad condensors could cause a lost spark. But those ones in there are very reliable and I can't imagine them both failing together. It would be a simple matter to swap the two if you're only loosing spark on one cylinder. Are you loosing spark on one cylinder or both?

As long as the coil is connected to the point you will measure a near dead short between the open point and ground. The primary winding in the coil is not many turns, and the other end is connected to ground.

Here's a test you might try though. Disconnect the wires that lead outside the magneto area from the points, and measure their resistance to ground. There shouldn't be any at all. Then measure the resistance between the two. Again, there shouldn be any except when the kill switch is depressed.

The coil's primary winding, which usually comes out the bottom of the coil is connected to the point immediately counter clockwise of it, like this:
Re: points

Paul,
Picking up on somthing you mentiond in another thread on setting point gaps, you explained that the correct position for the cam was with the key of the crank shaft adjacent to the teflon cam follower on each set of points, my clymer manual says to line the follower up with the "top" mark on the cam.
Which would you recomend.

Re: points

I had the bottom coil wire going to the point set immediately clockwise of the coil. *** backwards, haven't had a chance to crank it yet, but I bet that's the problem. I wasn't getting any spark before. Thanks alot!

Re: points

Changed that coil wire around and it fired right up. You don't know how aggravated I was with it! About ready to get rid of it.

Re: points

I was wondering if you had it backwards or just thought you had. Glad to hear you've got a runner now. :)
