Any negitives with useing a poly tank over aluminium? I believe that poly tanks were around awhile ago and disappeared. They are back again, but not sure if they are a problem. They seem to be offered in smaller boats, where larger boats are using aluminium[over 20']
Ed

can't think of any negs..just don't 'foam-it-in'.. you need air gap surround..

if not you will have a condensation tank instead of a fuel tank..

Crab bait, Thanks for the reply. Would the same condensation issue apply to aluminum tanks?
Ed

A couple negative things about a ploy tank. Keep them away from sharp objects. You could puncher the tank because of vibrations. It is easy to strip;p out the fittings.

Good common sense and you will never have trouble. Well all most never.

Re: Poly Fuel Tanks

Poly tanks will emit gas fumes. I have heard this before, and can verify that the 23 gallon tank I installed in my boat leaves a faint gas smell in the bilge after a while. I don't have any electrical connections in the bilge, so it's not an issue on my center console boat. If you're thinking of installing one that would be under the deck in a cuddy cabin, for instance, where the fumes might be a comfort issue, or if you have a bilge pump down there, do a little more research first. On the plus side, they are virtually indestructible and should last the life of the boat.

I'd Sooner Think you've got a Small Leak.......

Maybe in the Vent or Something.........

I wouldn't run Anything But a Poly Tank.......

Never had a Fume Issue.......

Re: Poly Fuel Tanks

But still, poly tanks emit a faint gas odor. I'm not the only one who's noticed it. See the following thread from The Hull Truth:

Gents,
I sold Poly tanks for well over 10 years. It is the nature of poly tanks to permeate! Coast Guard has done extensive testing to find out that the permeation is NEVER enough to create any kind of explosion hazard. It is just more an annoyance if the tank is located in the worng area of the boat. Find a way to vent your cabin or you console to alleviate the annoyance. Look on the bright side, in 10 years you won't have gas in the bilge creating an even bigger problem with explosion hazards and tank removal.

Bolton

amr72
Posted 12/1/2004 9:22 AM (#440116 - in reply to #438153)
Subject: RE: Poly fuel tank issue...

Registered:
2002-06-03

Location: New Jersey Bruce, thanks for your concern. I have contacted Aquasport and am awaiting their response before I do anything. Based on what I have learned about poly tanks, I don't think it is a safety issue, but definitely reduces the quality of the product. One hot and humid night, I spent in the cabin even with the screeded hatch open, I woke up with a terrible headache do to the smell. On a couple of other occasions with the hatch open, it wasn't really noticable. Anyway, I will fill everyone in as soon as I hear from them.
-----
2002 Aquasport 215 Explorer, 200hpdi

Kid Stuff
Posted 12/1/2004 11:24 AM (#440253 - in reply to #438153)
Subject: RE: Poly fuel tank issue...

Registered:
2003-01-12

You know, don't discount the possibility of a bad connection. It seems when anyone raises the issue of fuel odor in a boat with a poly tank the first answer is permeation. I have to say that the poly tank in my Whaler permeates fuel vapor , but, the odor is NEVER more than a faint trace odor. I have NEVER experienced a strong odor and I don't have the additional vents. I suspect you have more than a permeation issue. Good luck and post a follow up.

Lots of us keep a plastic gas can filled in a garage that is pretty air tight. We do not ever smell odor in or up close to the tanks. You have a bad tank. Replace it.---- Or a venting cap that is realising too soon.

Re: Poly Fuel Tanks

I replaced the the pitted aluminum tank in my boat with a moller poly tank of roughly the size.
I didn't like the crappy mounts that came with the tank so I built a set of brackets out of plywood and screwed/glassed them to the stringers.
I also used 2 part 4lb foam on all 4 corners just like the aluminum tank that came out. I have no condensation problems of gas fumes in my cuddy cab.
Maybe I am just lucky!
