Re: polymer bunk cover

Yes I have. Bought the material from TAP's Plastic, installed them on my center console trailer over a year ago and they work GREAT!!

I'm installing them on my 20' Beachcraft too. Only thing I'd advice is to not unhook the winch until the boat is in the water otherwise it may slide off your trailer too soon...if you know what I mean :p.

Wow, that might be just the ticket for my SeaRay. It is a bear to slide off and winch back on.

I'm installing some from Surfix this week or next. I'll let y'all know how they work out. They shipped really fast even though I had one digit wrong on my credit card. They called after they shipped 'em and asked for the right number.

+1 on leaving the winch strip/safety chains attached. The Surfix site had warnings, the invoice had warnings and the guy on the phone mentioned it - so they must be seriously slick!

Not sure about the paint, my toy is a 1960 Monark 14' jon so paint is the least of my worries (what little is left on the bottom). They had some testimonials on the site, one from some safety patrol types with PWCs and it didn't sound like a problem. Of course, they're only going to publish the good comments, but still.
Plus, they're white and 1/2" thick, unlike some of the cheap strips so I would think marring would be minimal. I'm installing mine straight on the bunks with no carpet so it will minimize worries about moving zebra mussels and other invasives around with me and the bunks will dry quicker too. I'm going to try to get 'em on the trailer the next couple days off unless the Captain finds too many other projects for me. :D

Re: polymer bunk cover

There seems to be several different kinds of materials being used.

Plastics, Polymers, UHMW

Is there a better one than the other or is one still as good as the others but just cheaper in cost?

We have a plastics company near where I live that sells UHMW by the sq/ft and will cut to suit.

Re: polymer bunk cover

When I purchased my trailer in '05, it came with the "plastic" bunk covers. I figured they'd be hittin the dumpster pretty soon.

BUT

I love them - they seriously cut the friction. It's like having a roller trailer, but with better support. As for paint wear. My boat is bottom painted, ablative, so after more than a couple hours in the water and it is soft enough to rub off with your finger. It is not wearing off any faster where it rides on the bunks than anywhere else. Although, I rarely need to winch more than an inch or two, so your mileage may vary.

Finally got 'em installed and, man, what a difference! Haven't made it to the lake yet, but winching it on dry when I finished was a breeze. I'm sure once I get 'em wet the boat will basically trailer itself at the end of the day. :)
