Hello everyone,
I currently own a 1991, model 202, Lowe pontoon boat and have a problem or have had a problem since last year since I put in a brand new marine stereo receiver to replace the cassette stereo system that was in it before. Anyway, since I installed the new stereo reciever the speakers and head unit shut down then power back up on me after a split second when the volume is turned up to about 26 or above. Today I did some troubleshooting and found out that the old original speakers are maxed watts of 25 watts so I did, last year replace one of the blown out speakers, not on my account, with a 65 watt max newer car speaker from Walmart that I bought as a combo kit that a few years back that had a receiver I used in a car but not the speakers. Anyway, I removed the plug in on all three 25 watt original boats speakers and I could crank the volume up pretty high on using the 65 watt speaker without them or the receiver cutting out but as soon as I reconnected each one, one at a time and disconnected and moved to another original speaker and did the same thing to eventually all then the reciever would shut down momentarily and start back up and cut off until I disconnected the boats original speakers again. I am thinking that the original boats, 25 watt, max peak speakers or worn and old and i did notice sokem white corrosion around the outside speaker magnet on the old speakers so I am thinking I need a good set of marine grade speakers to replace those three original speakers so this will solve the shutting down and staring up problem of my stereo system. What do you think? Am I right on my assumption?

Re: Pontoon boat speakers question?

OK I just went out to my pontoon boat with the speaker issues and my reciever the new one is rated at 4X40W for I guess 160 watts total power. The model number is ms15506 made by Aquatronics. The old speakers are made by Seaworthy, model number ps-4651b with 4 ohms impedence and peak watts of 25 watts. The speaker that works with the volume up is 65 watts peak, 4 ohms impedence? Also will my new reciever work with the new speakers mentioned in #2 thread above. Thanks for your help.

Re: Pontoon boat speakers question?

Hello everyone,
I went ahead and bought 2 brand new pairs of these speakers for my pontoon boat under $50.00 with shipping included. I should receive these no later than 2 May 2012. I cannot wait to get these so I can get these installed. Yeap, this Saturday I am getting my toon ready for the seaon so I am putting my toon in the driveway and do a little repairs on the rear bottom couch since the storage box wooden floor has a soft spot in it. I don't think it will be that big deal of a problem fixing it. The rest of the box is sound/solid except the very bottom of that couch storage box. So I am going to fix that and remove the old speakers and clean it up for the season can't wait to get it out on the water and I am excited about the first camping trip to lake Hartwell South Carolina over Memorial day weekend..

Re: Pontoon boat speakers question?

Yeap, I worked on getting my pontoon ready for the season and for the heck of it I wanted to look at the radio wiring and speakers and I think I found my issue for the stereo receiver shutting off then coming back on again when the volume was turned up. We'll it turns out that the red, battery wire, for the stereo had three butt ends connections connected to it and the ground, black wire, had two butt end connectors as well and I noticed on one of the butt connectors and the wire on the ground wire had some slight corrosion on it and I think the other butt end connector had a loose connection so after I cut out all the butt end connectors on both the red and black wires and re-striped the wires I only used one butt end connector on both those wires and I was able to crank the volume up with all the original speakers connected connected to the stereo again without any issues at all. Hopefully it is fixed and I am still installing those new speakers I bought since they were Pyle, Marine, speakers because the original speakers are worn out anyway so that saves me some money on, I thought, having to replace the head unit but it is brand new as of three years ago.

I use non insulated connectors, solder and heat shrink on all the electrical connections I have repaired on my boat. It holds up better than the regular butt connectors. You can get insulated connectors with heat shrink at the ends also. You can also get heat shrink with a type of glue in it that seals real well. The better you seal the connections, the fewer problems you will have. Glad you got your problem with your radio figured out.

Re: Pontoon boat speakers question?

Bubba, I order a complete Pyle marine stereo/speaker set off ebay a while back and installed it on my boat about a week ago. Mine sounds good (to me at least). The kit I bought included the cover, head unit, 4 speakers and remote. Got a good deal on ebay. Seems like a nice set up for a decent price. Good luck and happy boating!
