Pontoon Bunk "Slicks"

Just curious if anyone who uses their trailers regularly have installed those plastic "slicks" for the bunks on their trailers to load and unload easier?? I've been thinking of trying these for my pontoon trailer to make it easier loading and unloading. It seems that I have to back the trailer so far in to get the boat off as it just doesn't slide off very easily. Any other suggestions??

Re: Pontoon Bunk "Slicks"

I have a new 2010 Road King dual axle trailer with the bunk slicks on it. I made sure they were on it when I ordered the trailer. My pontoon is 24 ft long & I can tell you one thing. Make sure you have a safety rope of some kind attached to your pontoon when unloading it becuase the pontoon will slide off the trailer like its on greased rails. Not really that fast but it is 100% easier to unload/load once those bunks are wet then you could possibly believe. I will never go back to carpeted bunks again. The bunk slicks cost more but IMO they are worth every cent I paid for them & at my age I need all the help I can get at times. I don't think you will go wrong if you get them for your trialer.

Thanks Gent!! They sound like they would be just the ticket. I also read where someone even used Trex decking material and that sounds like a good idea too.

Just watch that they aren't too thick or you will dent the tubes.

Pontoons are hollow and relatively thin so they dent pretty easy, won't be major or anything but they will dent.

Re: Pontoon Bunk "Slicks"

The only thing I don't like about my trailer is the factory guide ons. They are short verticle pieces of galvanize 1-1/2" sq. tubing with PVC covering them which are only about 18" tall. I plan on installing bunk boards using the "slick" material & will make them longer & taller to give me more surface to guide the pontoon on the trailer. The way they are now they disappear complelely under the water depending on the loading ramp I am at. I prefer something taller & will definitly cover them with the slick material like I have on my bunks now.

I agree with VaGent...You better have your "toon" tied down when you start down the ramp or you will have it on the ground. Before I added the slicks, I took everything loose from my 20ft pontoon except for a rope. Since I addded the slicks I only let about 6 inches out on the strap until she is in the water. Piece of cake getting in back on the trailer.

KEEP IT FUN...KEEP IT SAFE!
