pontoon motor upgrade

need some help here.new to the site..i have a 1998 24ft pontoon with 50 hp yamaha 4 stroke..want to put on a 115..was looking at the mercury 115..found 2 of them one is 4 cylinder and one is 6 cylinder..what is the difference between them?one is a 1989 and one is 1984

In the same situation thinking about doing the same thing....however make sure your boat is rated for a 115 seeing as mine is only for a 100 hp. I'm hearing that I may run into trouble with Insurance.

ya, i had checked..its rated for a 115..also just not sure on how to hook up controls..my boat has the control built into boat.hope it goes easy..

Save yourself a lot of hassle and get the controls with the motor you buy. The Yammy controls aren`t going to work with the Merc. Also, ensure the motor your buying is a long shaft and propped for a pontoon.

The difference is about 5 years, lol

I would go with the 6 cyl. it's probably quiter & smoother.
