Pontoon Prop

Currently I have a 12.5 x 13 aluminum prop. I am happy with what I have for the most part. It is getting old and beat up and I would like to replace it.

Would switching to a something like this help with performance when I have a heavy load? I am really only looking at SS beacause of durability and I for this prop elsewhere for $185.

This particular prop says it has "Large ear design is ideal for pontoons, commercial hulls and heavy loads"

If you don't feel like this is a good idea what would you suggest? I could always get an aluminum replacement.

I have an 18ft pontoon with a 40hp Johnson.

Thanks!

Re: Pontoon Prop

You should read the stickies at the top of the page before making a final selection.
You need to make your prop selection based on your present max rpm and speed
and consider any performance preoblems.
Stainless is durable but costs more to repair.Usually not suggested if an area where hard contact is likely(rocks)ss will transmit more damage to the drive train even though they have a hub bushing to ease the impact. It will also be damaged though they are tougher. If soft contact is likely (sand or mud) a ss may hold up better. The prop described surely is ideal for a pontoon.
Solas Amita has an excellent 4 blade al that performs well for about 1/2 the money.

If you're happy with the prop you have other than its condition I'd suggest getting another one like it. Don't think you'll realize enough performance enhancement (if any) by springing for SS. The "elephant ear" design might be worth a shot, but I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Let us know how it turns out.

What would be the biggest thing to consider when switching to a 4 blade or elephant ear prop? Would it be the same size and pitch or do you need to adjust for that? I think my target RPM's are 4500-5500.

Assuming you old prop was exactly where you want it you would reduce the pitch 1 inch when going to a 4 blade. You motor needs to run close to that 5,500 figure at wot.
If you tell us your present max rpm and speed maybe we can help get on the right track.

Re: Pontoon Prop

This weekend with 3-4 people on the boat I was around 6,000-6,300 at WOT. My speed was right around 14mph.
