Pontoon Transom Trapped Wood Core

Picked up a project pontoon boat and I'd like to replace the wood transom core. Have a crack on starboard side of the transom where I believe the core is rotting and weakened so the motor is loose.

The transom wood core is practically welded into place, pictures attached. I'd like to go as non-invasive as possible to get to the core and be able to replace it. I'm thinking cut the top off the main wrap around and make the new wood core taller to compensate.

Other option would be to cut the legs off the inside gussets, and cut the middle support, replace the wood and then drill holes and reinforce the gussets with new angle pieces and laminate the center support on each side with aluminum plate (bolted).

I'll need to weld the crack on the starboard of the transom anyway, but would prefer to make the repaired core accessible in case of future needed replacement.

Thanks.

you need to weld anyway. however I would simply install some doubled up 3/4" marine ply and have it welded back up and go boating. you will sell the boat years before it ever needs attention again.

Thanks for the input Scott. I'll be doing the crack weld myself with a short window of time to do the repair with a borrowed welder. Wanting to avoid having any other welding done for both cost and time sake.

Also I'd like to help out the next poor SOB who has this boat. Welding it back in is like redoing the whole kitchen floor and then mounting cabinets on top. It was quick and easy the first time around, but very much a PITA when the floor needs repaired and your the second owner.

Do you weld aluminum proficiently? If not, pay the $50 to have it welded

Welding aluminum isnt for the uninitiated
