Pontoons taking on water

1984 Lowe Pontoon seems to take on about 1/2 gallon of water in toons after about a 4 hour use on the lake. It has drain plugs on the back, but I had thread tape on them. Is it normal condensation from the styrofoam inside, or could there be a leak? Toons are the "U" shaped not round. If it is a leak some where how can I find it?

Hi Gilligan.

Easy way is to put a pound or two of air in them and paint the welded seams with a soap solution. If it bubbles, it leaks. Look for any place on the logs that may have hit some thing in the water. Repairs can be made by any competent welder skilled in aluminum welding. Or I have know guys to make a patch from epoxy. I'd opt for the weld.

When I discovered that my pontoon had a leaking log, I found it very easy. I took the plug out and was draining the pontoon, and it was sucking air in through the leak so fast that it whistled, as the air replaced the water draining out, I traced the sucking, whistling sound too the leak. Do not buy a Lake Raider Pontoon, as a leaking log was just one of the problems with my Lake Raider when purchased. :D :D :D :D

Air is the best way to find a leak in a pontoon and if it is just a small hole you can take a metal screw with some JB Weld on it and screw it into the hole and it will hold untill you can get it fixed.

If it's in a seam though, do like OBJ said and get it welded up.
