I have a 2000 reinell with a 3.0 mercruiser and the est ignition. the boat seems to idle ok, however when you try to accelerate the tach needle starts bouncing around irratically and the motor starts clattering and missing. the best i can liken it to is a diesel clatter. any ideas what this could be? my first thought is ignition since the tach is going crazy....

Make sure everything in the ignition system is correct, wiring, spark plug wires, spark plugs, timing, etc.

plugs are new and gapped properly, new wires, cap and rotor are new, ignition control module is also new. i noticed that the aluminum plate under that module was really warm. is it normal for it the get pretty hot?

check the spark plug's by looking at how they are burning you will be able to see a lot. last week i was stupid and let a parts guy cross reference my spark plug he gave me hotter plug's. bad idea in a boat.

good luck
