If I suspect my poppet valve spring is "weak" should I try and stretch it, or should I clip one loop from it. I don't think I'm getting the water flow I need at say 2500 rpms. cools fine at idle (thermostat controlled), cools fine at 5000 rpm, Poppit works sufficiently. How about it, clip a loop or stretch it????

Re: Poppet valve

grandx,

I'd like to know the same question....
It would be nice if someone who knows would help us out... However, I'm pretty sure that since this is a pressure relief valve, and by looking at the valve itself, to help get water flow easier the solution is to clip a loop... I just did this myself on my 86' Merc. 175 tonight... This would make it easier to open once the water pressure rises.. I also wonder about the grommet and carrier that fits around the head. The plastic piece that pushes on the spring seemed to me to fit just a little tight into the grommet. I wonder if that could be a cause. I didn't change them however, because they looked like they were in great shape. And it probably wouldn't take more than 15 psi to move it even with the spring in place.
If I'm wrong on the spring "clipping" I'd love to hear why... I also put in new stats and an entirely new water pump, even though the pump I removed was in great shape.
P.S. Are you aware that there is a carrier (weird looking wahser) that fits against inside a counter bored hole in the head and a the smaller grommet that fits inside the first. They are basically both fit into the hole in the head if installed properly. The plastic piece should slide inside the small grommet that fits inside the larger one... If they are not inplace properly it could cause the spring to be compressed and may lead to a malfunction... I thought I read that someone was having problems with the grommet maybe it was you, I thought I would mention it...
