Re: Poppet valve

Dead Eye, I think I can help on this one. I have a 1991 135-horse, and I think they are very close to the same.

Face your motor from the starboard side. Look at your switchboxes. About even with the bottom ends of the switchboxes and a tad towards the cylinder head, on the block itself, you'll see an odd shaped plate about three inches long with two rounded ends, held in place by four bolts. The poppet is under that plate. Once you get the thing out, you'll see how it works.

I dunno if it's going to take care of your symptoms to replace it, but that's where it is.

Best of luck!

-dd-

Re: Poppet valve

Dead Eye, It's always good to check the poppet, especially to make sure that it is not stuck open at lower rpms and will open properly at higher rpms. If it is open all the time, the water will exit the block and not fully circulate through the system (at lower rpms).

However, a spurting tell-tail isn't necessarily a sign of problems if the thermostats haven't opened yet. Check the poppet, if it's ok and you still have spurts it's probably the nature of your motor. How warm is the water coming out of the tell-tail?
Here is a link to a poppet valve diagram...
I hope it works, you may have to copy and paste it....

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...berList=120,70,80,20,30,10,180,130,170,140,19 0,40,100,110,90,290,270,250,300,280,260,320,330,350,340,360,0,370,380,400,390,160,150,420,430,410,440,210,200,60,230,240,220,310,50

Re: Poppet valve

If the poppet and t-stats check out and the condition remains, check/replace your head gaskets. When they leak they can show the same signs.

Good luck and keep us informed!

Re: Poppet valve

The water out of the tell-tale is HOT. I can only hold my hand in it for 10 secs.. The head is hot also, about 10 secs. I ran the motor for about 1\2 hr. I put the water pump on at the end of last season (when i got the boat). I run in salt water. Had no problems last year. Could the water pump go bad so soon?
Thanks ,Dead Eye

Re: Poppet valve

Did I misunderstand your first post? I thought you were having trouble locating the poppet...but maybe you meant that the manual doesn't suggest replacing it to cure the symptoms you're seeing?

Anyway, ten seconds is a pretty long time. But I'm not sure the pain threshold is a good way to tell about motor temps! I've been wrestling a [probably nonexistent] temperature issue for a while. One thing I looked at was the telltale outlet temperature by using a mug and a cooking thermometer. You might try that.

-dd-

Re: Poppet valve

Well, that's too hot....

You should diffinitely check the poppet. This of course, after you are sure that the pump and stats are working properly. A compression check of the cylinders wouldn't hurt also...
