Gents,
Re: 1990, 454's, 330HP Mercruisers full fresh water cooled:
Went on a 132 mile round trip this past weekend. An early engine check reveled what sounded like a blown out exhaust manifold gasket on the port engine. At idle I could hear tick-tick-tick. When underway I noticed the engine surging while cruising at 3200 RPM's. When we got to our destination the ticking sound was more pronounced and I assume more of the gasket had blown out. Could this be causing the high gas usage on this engine? It literally used twice as much fuel as the stbd engine. Last season I had big problems with the ethanol gas and had to get the carb on the stbd engine rebuilt. Do you think some crud made its way to the carb on the port engine and some how (I don't know how) made the secondaries stick open. What would be a good procedure to trouble shoot this problem?
Thanks guys!!
