Hi all! I recently bought a old 73 Duracraft 14' semi-V and it has a 1970 Evinrude 6hp and it came with a 6 gal plastic fuel tank. It has been sitting for some time and though it is empty I smell that bad gas smell when I take the lid off really strong. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to handle this? Can I use fresh fuel and go with it or is there something I should do first? Thanx in advance!

Fill 3/4 tank with hot water and apply an overdose of detergent, let soak for some hours. Empty tank and dry inside properly. Bad smell won't make an engine to fail as long tank?s inside is immaculate clean. With consecutive fuel fills odor will eventually disappear.

Happy Boating

"apply an overdose of detergent" What kind of detergent should a fella use?

If the tank is now clean but still smells of stale fuel, I'd forego the detergent and just fill it up and go. After a few fill ups, it will smell like fresh gas...

Yeah....I looked in there and there's really nothing in there as per crud of any kind I see a little bit of what looks like mixed fuel left in the little corners and such but when you tilt it they do run so it's not a hard residue or anything. I think I will use a little fresh gas and just slosh it around and dump it out and then fill her up with fresh mix and let her rip! LOL! Thanks a bunch y'all!

No detergent. Drain it (safely) and spray the inside with a good blast of water from a hose. Then drain it again. Repeat. Put a 1/2 bottle of rubbing alcohol in it and shake to disperse the water and then drain it again. Finally, put it out in the sun for the remaining drops of alcohol to evaporate. Done.

Thanks Jim S123 ....I will do that. I put some gas in it this evening and kinda sloshed it all around and I am letting it set overnight. Tomorrow I will drain it and hit it with water then toss in the rubbing alcohol and then I will feel pretty good about using it.
