I am thinking about putting a posi rear end in my 1/2T 2000 Silverado. Should I go with a G80 which I believe was the optional rear end for that truck or go for something else? Main need is for use light snow when I don't want to put chains on for a very short distance.

I have had the G80 in a couple of my trucks but it is not going to be cheap as you have to re-set the gear pattern. I had a 95 Sulverado and put a lock-rite in the rear diff and that thing was awesome - DIY product and no gears to mess with, That thing was awesome. Only issue (and it was a small one) is when turning a corner sometimes you could hear it un-lock but that was a small price to pay for the traction that thing gave. It's like a rear with a spool but allows you to turn. When I sold the truck I pulled it out and put it in my 2000 Sierra - Had to buy new end gears from the company. I wanted to pull it out but misplaced all of the original stuff.

I wish I had the G-80 in my 2500 but I have been too cheap to spend the money............. I do have 4wd so I just live with what I have.

I do carry a set of chains in the tool box just in case but have never had to use them. I also keep 2000 lbs of sand mix in the bed during the winter.

I had desert rat put in a eaton posi and a 410 gears in my 2004 silverado...Cost 900$ installed...No chirping around corners that i've noticed but you can feel both tires spin in water when you stomp on it...They offered a g80 (I think) and said around corners you will hear it ratchet and there are clutches to replace every couple years...The Eaton I have only needs the regular service my non-locking rear end had...

A G-80 (aka govlok) only engages when there is a difference in rotation speed of the rear tires so going around a corner it doesn't engage but if you loose traction and there is about a 5-10 mph difference between the tires it locks into a possi and when you get over a certain speed about 25mph the possi will disengage and will not engage above that speed, Clutches last a long time in them because it is only a possi when it looses traction, when it isn't needed it acts like an open carrier

I had mine explode in my 2000 Silverado (at about 175k miles), I got another g-80 carrier off ebay for about $75 and a new ring and pinion for about $200 and a shim and bearing kit for about $150 a few hours of labor and I was back on the road. and have over 10,000 on this one

if you do go with the govlok DO NOT use friction modifiers like you would a limited slip rear end
and the g-80 is made by Eaton I believehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbMZ9vcYVSg
