i have a 1971 johnson 60 horse. it runs good but it seems to me that the engine is getting to hot because even after running long enough to open thermostat the heads are really warm. i can hold my hand about three inches away and feel the heat. i do not know if the thermostat is opening or not. is it ok to pull it out and run it that way or will it damage my engine.

Are you running with the muffs or in a barrel? Chech for debris in the water inlets. you are getting exhaust/ waterout the ports.

also just because your getting the thermo to open your impeller may be worn out and not pushing enough water. good luck. Welcome to iboats.

Thermostats are there for a reason. Running without will cause too cold running and carbon buildup. Easy to check the stat operation on the stove in a pot of water. Heat to opening temp and see if stats open as they should. Of course you need to measure the water temp.

You need to check the actual temp of the head, can you borrow one of those laser temp guns and check the actual temp of the head?
