Volvo Penta 4.3GL PEFS in a larson lxi 190. I have three questions. One head is cracked approx 2 1/2 in can this be fixed or just replace both heads? If i replace the heads does the block need to be miked down for a good seal. Last if i just replace the engine how do i do it? The space to get to the engine bay is not very wide? If someone could point me in the right direction i would be greatful.

Re: Possible engine replacement

Generally an iron block will be ok, just be sure the new or reconditioned heads have been decked (checked for total flatness and then machined if not).

I am not sure what symptoms you have that led you to find this crack, or where the crack is, i.e. combustion chamber, valve guide, or external somewhere.

If both heads are still installed then you can check compression, that will tell you general health of the block and if it is worth trying new heads before deciding if a new engine is required. Then when you remove the heads you can tell if the engine needs to be replaced.
