Possible for someone to put an Alpha lower unit on a Gen II upper?

I have a lower unit that went bad do to no lube. Upon inspecting the old unit (came with the boat) and the replacement they are different. The original one has what seems to be an oil passage from upper to lower (see attachment please) and the new replacement does not. The lube in the upper unit is nice and clean, no water, and didn't feed the bottom unit.... only when I removed the lower unit did the top drain down. Before pulling the lower unit I removed the drain plug on it to find 90% water (maybe 4 oz or so) and probably what the manufacture has put in the unit before delivery.

I'm working on a GEN II (don't know serial, where can that be found?)

You have to have that passage. Is that new one NEW or what. Sure you don't have an outboard lower unit?

Don, the best I know is it was replaced by the previous owner under the advisement of the owner before that. It's is supposedly a reman unit he paid around 600.00 for. I have yet to see the receipt.

When I get home I can post actual pictures of the units ("original" and "replacement"). The new one (reman or whatever it is) definitely does not have the passage.

So that is my lube issue, correct? The upper seems fine so I think I'm safe to just replace the lower unit.

Was looking over the possibility of someone putting an outboard lower unit on this boats I/O setup. The vertical shaft in the outboards is much longer, but I suppose during assembly at the reman outfit that an outboard lower case was used with the internals of an I/O unit. This being the reason this lower unit doesn't have the oil passage from upper to lower unit?

Is there a vent plug at the top of the lower unit? If there is, it's an outboard lower housing. I'm not sure it's even possible, never really had a reason to try.
