Possible for too much oil pressure?

My 1990 5.7L runs about 60 psi on the gauge when cold idling, only drops to around 50 when warm. With increased rpm it'll go up to 70. It has Rotella 15w-40 in it, but the engine is fairly new, 119 hours. Is there such a thing as too much pressure? I'd rather have high pressure than low pressure, for sure. Is it a simple issue of too high viscosity (manual calls for straight 30 weight), a sludgy engine, or maybe a bad gauge? It sat unused for maybe 10 years.

Re: Possible for too much oil pressure?

Mornin,
I'd make darn sure that both gauge and sending unit are good, sometimes you can borrow such items for testing, from fellow boaters of local marina/ boat shop....if both of those work fine, well heck, you said low hour motor, because on older/ more hour engines, carbon build-up is one reason for high oil pressure, i hope some of the saltier dogs here speak up, it seems if nothing else, it would by super hard on your gaskets, cause leaks............anyhow......hope all goes good...........Mark

Had the same issue with my former boat 1988 260 hp OMC Cobra. I checked it with a mechanical gage and it was fine. I sold the boat but my next thing was to check the sending unit with a cheap gage to see if it read the same as the gage on the dash. If not then change the sending unit. I only used straight 30w in mine.

My 96 5.8L runs 70 on oil pressure. Never wondered if it was to much
