Possible gear drive problems...

once again i am having issues with my motor...it's a 1988 evinrude 50 hp model E50TLCCS. While out on the lake today i noticed a wierd noise that i dont remember hearing before. It sounds like a clacking / knocking noise. I have deduced that it is coming from mid/lower area as it only does it in forward/reverse gear. Once i got it home i put it in forward gear (without motor running) and went to the prop to see how much it would turn freely. Well, i was able to rotate the prop about 40-60 degrees before i felt the gears kick in. My question is , is that normal or should the gear set not allow that much free travel in the prop? Is my gear box shot and if so ,roughly how much can i expect to pay for new gears?

Completely normal. Look at the clutch dog and gear recesses to see why.

Re: Possible gear drive problems...

Drained the lower unit oil last night and found some metal shavings noting big in size but a fair bit of it. The oil was greenish and silver. Am i correct in assuming that i need to pull the lower unit off to inspect further to find the source of the noise. And if so how difficult is it to drop the LU as i have never done this before. I want to resolve this issue before i go out on the water again. Dont wanna screw things up even worse.

Re: Possible gear drive problems...

so i have the lower unit pretty much torn apart, but i am stuck with the main drive shaft and prop shaft. I have the nut off at the pinion gear, but cannot get the drive shaft to slide out. Is there something that i am missing here. my pinion and forwards gears are blown and need to replace them. my manual isnt very much help as it is a generic evinrude book that covers all models. what i see from the top on the driveshaft is the bearings, with the pinion nut off shouldnt the D/S just slide out at this point....please help me out i need this back together for the weekend.

thanx guys

i appreciate it
