Hello everyone. I have a 1996 Volvo Penta 3.0 with SX outdrive. I have an exhaust leak near the front of the motor that I thought was my manifold gasket. I purchased a new gasket and installed and still had the same leak. I reinstalled using the gasket and copper spray and am fairly confident that I have no manifold gasket leak... However, I do still have an exhaust leak in the same place. It is hard to see the exact location, but I do know that it is from the cylinder that is in the very front of the motor. I am thinking that it may be the head gasket but I can't tell because the manifold blocks me fron seeing exactly where the leak is. I can feel the exhaust pumping out by reaching my fingers under the manifold and feeling the hot air blow while engine is running. I have NO water in oil and have been told that I would have water in oil if it is a head gasket. Is it possible that my head gasket is leaking exhaust only?? And how can I diagnose to be sure?? Thanks for any help in advance.

If you have an exhaust leak at the gasket, then pull the manifold, clean and inspect the gasket surfaces of the head and the manifold for defects. I you aren't sure what to look for, take some clear pictures of the manifold and head (After you get them cleaned up) and maybe we can see something you missed.
