Possible Outdrive Problem

I have a 1985 Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 3.0L 140 which was recently out of the water for a new starter and tune-up. I have an Alpha Gen 1 outdrive which has been very reliable. Unfortunately, I think I may have been torturing it since I am now finding out that running the boat out of the water with the "muffs" on the outdrive is not reccommmended for too long or to exceed 1000 rpm's. Is this true? If it is true, I have been running my boat daily for a month at varying rpm's to make sure everything was ok before I dropped it in the water. I did notice recently that between 2000-3000 rpm's the drive make a rattle but is smooth before and after those rpm's. I also noticed when I put it in the water yesterday that the acceleration was sluggish, almost like something was holding the boat back. It did eventually plane but seemed like it was struggling to stay up. I usually had a top speed of 33mph GPS and I topped out yesterday at 24mph GPS, although it was in very choppy water. I think I did some damage without realizing it. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ayuh,... Your current Problem is a Motor problem, Not a Drive problem...

Re: Possible Outdrive Problem

Thanks for your response Bondo. I am at a total loss right now. The only thing I can come up with that has changed since last season is the exhaust manifold. It was replaced with a perfect match and had no issues. Should I be looking at the carb?

Ayuh,... A General Tune Up maybe, or the fuel Filters, or maybe the Carb...

Thanks again. I appreciate your help. Should I be at all concerned about the outdrive based on my original post? I did change the oil and it was clean and free of metal filings. I am concerned about the rattle between 2000-3000 rpms.

Re: Possible Outdrive Problem

Thanks again. I guess I will play it by ear. I have the unlimited towing package just in case. I will definitely look into the fuel filters/carb issues. The filters were new but I have been running out some old gas. That might be the problem alltogether. The fuel wasn't too bad but still from last summer. I added sta-bil before winterizing and ran it down to almost empty this spring. I added new fuel recently but failed to re-check the filters. Maybe I snagged some sediment from the bottom of my fuel tank into the new filters. I will replace them regardless. I will keep my fingers crossed with the outdrive. If there were to be a problem with the gears, I should have seen plenty of shavings in my old gear oil which I didn't. Thanks for your help as always.

Re: Possible Outdrive Problem

I just found something that may be the source of the problem I am having. I noticed my fuel line going from the fuel pump to the carb was a little kinked. Could the carb be starving for fuel due to the kink? It's not that bad but a kink is a kink.
