After more review I find that the 1995 escort seems to be one of the better values in used cars. Even for 15 hundred if the car has had reasonable service its a good gamble that it has lots of miles left in it. It for sure meets the goal I set for buying a used car . My formula is to get 10 thousand miles of low maintenance cost for every 1 thousand spent.

These cars are not known to run 200k without major issues as few american made cars are.

There is not much to stop these cars from reaching 200K miles, short of lack of maintenance, or the body rotting round the engine/transmission.

And while I haven't been down on the ground and under the car yet (it was raining heavily when I drove it) there was not visible rock rust or any rust, for that matter.

I just need to make sure the split folding rear seatbacks will latch into their upright position (the release buttons on both were pushed down, and I couldn't get them to lock into place) and I am going to make an offer on the car. If not today, then tomorrow.

Well, stopped before work yesterday and closed the deal. $1200. He even fixed a latch on the right quarter window! The hatchback lift shocks even hold the lid up. I am not sure that there is anything on this car that doesn't work! I'll post a photo or two later today or tomorrow. Thanks again for the insights.

Sounds like a nice deal. I believe you have to actively try to kill those cars. It's tough to find a sub $5k used car nowadays that hasn't been mercilessly flogged.
