Hi, I have a chance to but a 1976 85 Horse Merc for 626 from ebay. Pics look good. I am posting the add into my post. The motor is in Texas and I will have to have it shipped. Any advice. Rhe motor will be replacing a shot Evinrude on a tri-hull I have. I want the motor, but I am not sure about buying a motor on ebay. Ad - "This is a used mercury 1976 outboard motor. Power tilt, comes with all controls. Runs great, rebuilt 2004. Stainless steel propeller. Come of pontoon boat because it had to much power. Buyer arranges shipping, please no question about shipping because I would not have a clue. Need to get at least a 1000.00, after all the work that was done. Serial number is 436959"

Thanks

Re: Possible Purchase

Ebay is usually pretty reliable if you check the feedback of the seller and ask the right questions. Ask if it has distributor or ADI ignition - for example.

-W

Re: Possible Purchase

That would be way too much stress for me hct4all...too many unknowns:

Unknown #1. What will the auction end at and what will you end up paying.

Unknown #2 What will shipping cost...and what happens if it get damaged in shipping.

Unknown #3 Rebuilt in 2004. Hmmmmm..."Rebuilt"...just exactly what was done and by whom.....Rebuilt means different things to different people.

Give me a few minutes and I can probably come up with a few more. I don't mean to be totally negative...but I wouldn't be comfortable buying in that manner.

With all the lakes in PA...can it be that hard to find a decent motor nearer to you? A lot of people are re-powering with 4-strokes.....

Anyway...good luck...let us know what happens.

Chuck

PS....I have the same motor...mine is a year newer and doesn't have the distributor ignition. When I got mine I had to completely re-wire the thing...the insulation and wire itself was a real weak-point in that vintage of Mercury.

You said it was off a toon. Was it a yard monkey or a marina magnet? If it was the latter and it sat in the water, better payclose attention to the lower unit. If it was tilted up and out of the water you are better off, but most magnet boats suffer from lack of adequate service.

Mark
