So how many times have us mechanics heard of or had one of those, "the gearhousing won't drop off" problems when the driveshaft rust's into the crankshaft. Well I'm trying something different with one currently at the shop. 225 Ocean Pro with a blown lower unit. Wedged it down about a half inch and using a sawzall, cut thru the waterpump housing just between the wear plate and impeller and thru the drive shaft. I figure it beats cutting thu the exhaust housing then the shaft. This week I'll pull the powerhead and the top part of the driveshaft out and see how it goes then. I'll keep everyone informed of the progress.
BTY, only took about and hour and three blades to drop the unit.

We usually send them back out the door due to the age of the engines and the costs associated with repairing them when this happens. But I figure the lower has a two piece shaft anyway so what have we got to lose other than the upper half of the shaft.

Re: Possible solving recurrent problem

Never had to go to such an extreme up here, but then again, dont have to deal with the salt water that you boys down south have to either. That and the fact that I drop my lower units at least once every year or two and always replace the o ring at the top of the shaft after applying a new coat of marine grease.

I have a funny feeling that that step is often skipped for some reason or another.
