i have a 50 force outboard model number 507f9b serial 1878. i just replaced starter with a brand new one. i hooked up battery and when i turned the key i got nothing besides the choke clicking. im not sure if the battery is good or not but when i jump the solienod from postive battery to postive starter it will turn over. i need to test voltage on battery but i was wondering if the key switch could be bad or is it possibly a bad battery.
thanks

Re: possible starter trouble

Corrosion hidden in a connection. Disassemble, clean and reassemble all battery leads. Negative especially.

Re: possible starter trouble

If you have power to the choke, you have power to the ignition switch and most likely nothing is wrong there. Check on the side of the engine and see if the neutral interlock switch button is being depressed. You can try moving the control handle to reverse, then forward, then back to neutral. Sometimes due to compliance in the control cable, when the control handle is in neutral position, the linkage is actually not in neutral or centered on the button. The interlock prevents starting in gear.

I agree with checking the neutral switch lock. If that is not the problem, then I would check the ignition switch.
