Possible to replace reed petals?

I have a 96' 75 hp Force that stutters and hesitates on acceleration and the plugs continually foul up after only a few hours of running. The carb has been rebuilt. I removed the reed adapter with the 3 reed blocks and can see daylight through several petals on each block which according to my Seloc manual indicates the reed block assembly needs to be replaced. Each reed assembly is about $80 to replace so $240 for all 3. It appears that the petals are screwed to the reed block so removing them would be easy. My question is can't you buy and replace the individual petals without paying for an entire assembly and if so does the Force dealer sell individual petals? Or could you remove the petals and press them in a vice to flatten them out so they close tight again?

Re: Possible to replace reed petals?

I've been very well acuainted with chainsaw engines having raced goKarts in the past. We would soop them up during the week, and blow them up every weekend. We found that reed valves just stayed open mid range & up. Idle and lower speeds they flap. In large O/B they proibly are a more complicated situation. We would straighten them out by rubbing them with a spoon/oil on a piece of wood. You will find that it doesen't take much to change the shape of the reed. Try flipping the reed also? I would try to slolve the problem before spending lot's of $
