1975 25hp Evinrude. Compression is 120 and 125. Spark jumps 7/16" on tester. Engine absolutely will not even try to star in water. If I remove it from barrel, pull plugs and drain all left over fuel...Basically dry it out really well. I can sparay some mix into carb and it fires right up. Only thing I think of is water getting pulled into cylinders. Any other possible way water can get there other than head gasket?

Did you try spraying the mix in the carb when it was in the tank ?? Have you checked your fuel for water??

I would think that you should be able to see the water on the plugs if it is leaking water that badly.

There was water on the plugs. The carb has been cleaned and rebuilt. Yes, it will start in tank if you dry it out first but if you leave it in water for extended time it won't restart. Fresh mix in gas tank makes no difference either. Everyone keeps saying it cant be a head gasket with such good compression numbers but how else could water get into the cylinders?

sounds to me like your carb float neddle is stuck open and flooding the motor, explains while it starts after you dry it out. No way for water to get into the head when it is not running as it drains back to the barrel

"it will start in tank if you dry it out first but if you leave it in water for extended time it won't restart" Flooding!!! stuck float needle! Clean/replace these neddles or does your float even float anymore?

It's funny you should post this. A small engine mechanic friend of mine said the exact same thing yesterday. Although I put a kit in it, he said sometimes you have to gently tap on the new needle to "seat it" as they can have tiny burrs on them from the factory. We'll see if the shop comes to same conclusion. If not, I'll be sure to check when I pick the motor up. I tested the needle when installed by turning carb upside down and blowing into it but he said that doesn't generate enough pressure to properly test it. It would explain why my primer bulb never felt good and tight as well. Good call.
