Hi everyone!

As always, love the site. I'm considering buying an older Mercury OB Mark 55A, the price is good and i need a motor asap. Does anyone have any experience with these models? Thanks

Yes, they are very good, reliable outboards...definitely low tech, ie. pre-electronic ignition, etc. But if you're old enough to remember the basics of servicing a motor with an old fashioned distributor, points, etc., they are a lot of fun and very simple to work on. They are also carbureted, not fuel injected. I think you can find a service manual at www.acmeoutboards.com. They may still have those manuals.

Forgot to mention to check all the basics before you buy, like: compression, spark, take a look at the carbs, check the wiring under the cowl, and check the lower unit lube and condition of the case. Best is to see it run, or better yet take it for a spin. Just exercise the same buyer beware caution you would when buying a more modern motor.
